Now a day’s most of the vehicles contain turbo-engines or turbocharger, basically a turbocharger is a mechanical device. It increases engine power by filling or pumping air into the combustion chamber.
A turbocharger works by exhaust gases and the turbocharger was first invented by Alfred Buchi in 1905. Basically, it is a compressor driven by exhaust gases and forces the air to internal combustion to enhance engine power.
It is important to remember that the combustion process not only depends on fuel intake, but it does require sufficient amount of air to initiate the process. The mixture of fuel and air is compulsory for the combustion process. If the engines gets higher amount of air, it will allow more amount of fuel to burn.
The higher amount of fuel means more output. Here, it is important to mention that the supercharger enables the compression process, it has been fitted to compress the intake air. The supercharger is controlled by gear, chain or belt.
The turbocharger consists of two fans enclosed at both ends of common shaft. The turbocharger gets the power from exhaust gases, the exhaust gases are routed through one fan placed at one end of common shaft and this fan is also called turbine.
The turbine in turn rotates the common shaft and the common shaft spins the opposite fan. The opposite fan is also called the compressor so it compresses the air which is entering in the engine’s intake manifold.
It is important to mention that the supercharger and turbocharger are connected with an intercooler and work in tandem. So before the air enters into the engine, the intercooler works to cool the compressed air. It is important to highlight that the air gets some heat in it because of compression and the heated air becomes less dense.
And as result the air produces knocking or pinging whereas the intercooler helps to keep the air cool, the cooling increases the air density before the actual combustion takes place. Remember, an intercoolers are placed between the turbo and the intake manifold.
The turbocharger are commonly and widely used within the four-cylinder vehicles. The turbochargers have some benefits as well as few drawbacks. In regard with the benefits, the turbochargers are beneficial for the extra power to engine. The turbochargers grant power on-demand which in result increases engine performance and speed capability of particular vehicle.
An additional cost and complexity are two major drawback of turbocharger, turbo lag is another negative side of the turbocharger. The latest engineering efforts have developed twin-turbo designs which had reduced the turbo-lag factor up-to some extent. In-fact, the cost and complexity of turbochargers are still a challenge.
