Having some resemblance with the former Jetta Sportwagen, the new Golf Sportwagen is out now, it’s an all-new car, says Volkswagen. And it is, with a 2.0-litre diesel engine and MQB platform, it’s now sharper and is being taken over by the Golf nameplate.
The reason behind the name change is Volkswagen’s new modular chassis architecture, the MQB platform, on which this international hatchback is now riding on.
Mark Gillies, manager, product and technology communications said “Because the car has gravitated onto the MQB platform and has always been on the Golf platform, it was felt that it was the correct time to align them.”
The EA288 turbo diesel is sharing 2.0-litre displacement and the front-wheel-drive cars now have a power output of 150bhp, having a bump of 10bhp. The torque remains the same at 236 pounds-feet. This may not sound earth shattering but still, it is capable of taking Volkswagen into the next decade. The noise is reduced noticeably, smoothness has been increased, and most importantly, it is greener than ever before.
The fuel economy is also impressive, 31 in the city, 42 on the highway and 35mpg as combined.
The other notable changes are that this Sportwagen has now been conceptualised as an extra-long hatchback by given about a foot in length than a regular Golf.
Then there are the engines, a 1.8-litre TSI turbo petrol and a 2.0-litre turbo diesel, available in three trims, S, SE, and SEL.
The 2015 Golf has earned at least seven “car of the year” awards in Europe, Japan and U.S. It has outsold the regular Golf TDI by a small amount and still leading the sales. 80 percent sales have been in the favour of TDI. The TSI petrol version will sell better over time, this is what Gillies thinks.
