New entry in the Mercedes line-up, the E-Class Estate which is expected to go on sale later this year. The German manufacturers has claimed that this would be the most intelligent estate it has ever built. At its launch, the UK Mercedes engines with options are the same as for the saloon, with E 220d and E 350d diesel as well as a new AMG E 43 petrol.
The E-Class Estate is closely similar to the saloon on which it’s based, however, the roofline is extended further back from the B-pillar. The rear lights are also almost identical to the smaller C-Class Estate from the tailgate on to the wings. The long overhang is much more practical and makes it the most practical premium estate in its class.
Mercedes has introduced its new 2.0-litre four cylinder 220d engine with the outputs of 67.2mpg and CO2 emission with 109g/km. Due to its huge size, the performance is slightly at the suffering point as it covers 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds, a bit higher from its rivals. Another powerful V6 E350d engine claims 52.3mpg and 140g/km whereas the 4WD AMG E43 produces 33.6mpg and 192g/km. All cars use the same familiar nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox.
As far as the load volume is concerned, it features a total of 1,820 litres which beats the Audi A6 Avant (1,680 litre). However, it seems it falls short from the massive and significantly cheaper Skoda Superb with 1,950 litre of huge loading capacity. Mercedes E-Class Estate has decided to come with the third row of seats in the boot later this year.
The Estate is featuring the same fine quality interior as the saloon has. It is equipped with the huge 12.3-inch screen and digital dials whereas the entry-level models have the same conventional analogue setup. The classy material which is used in the E-Class Estate includes open-pore woods, metals and leather. The Estate also includes plenty of kit like the saloon.
Moreover, active brake assist is standards whereas the semi-autonomous Drive Pilot system in also included which allows the drivers to safely follow the car in front even at the speed of 130mph. However, the Remote Parking Pilot is optional.
In addition to some special features, the E-Class Estate is introducing an Acoustic Comfort Package. It applies a special film to the windscreen and side windows along with further insulations in the footwells which a provides lower levels of background noise. It is expected that Mercedes will introduce this system from the end of the year.
